Overview Of Tour

December is when the Northwest turns crisp and clear: cold mornings, sharp mountain light and roads you'll be talking about for years. This group departure is built for riders with miles under their belt — long mountain days, two of the North's big four passes, and nights with Thai and Dao families who'll feed you far more than you can eat.

Trip facts: 8 days / 7 nights · ~1,190 km · Hanoi – Hanoi · Level: Moderate–Challenging · Price: from $1,635 per rider

Why ride it with AZ: our road captains run this loop every month — they'll pace the long days so you enjoy the passes instead of chasing them.

Tour Highlight

  • Khau Pha and O Quy Ho — two of Vietnam's "Four Great Passes" in back-to-back days
  • Ferry over the Da River and quiet Road 43 that most tours never use
  • Lung Lo Pass, the old supply route to Dien Bien Phu
  • A day off the bike trekking through Sapa's villages and rice terraces
  • Swimming stop and boat ride on Thac Ba, Vietnam's largest man-made lake

Intinerary

Day 1 Hanoi → Mai Chau · 170 km · ~4h · (L/D)

We meet, fit your bike and leave the city traffic behind, riding past Hong Son Lake's limestone islets. Afternoon free in the valley, then Thai dancing and a night in a stilt house.

Proposed distance: 170 km

Day 2 Mai Chau → Phu Yen · 190 km · ~6h · (B/L/D)

Up to the Moc Chau tea plateau for a tasting stop, then off the main road onto Road 43, a ferry across the Van Yen reservoir and a simple homestay in Phu Yen.

Proposed distance: 190 km

Day 3 Phu Yen → Nghia Lo · 130 km · ~6h · (B/L/D)

Short in kilometres, big in character: the 15 km climb of Lung Lo Pass, bombed hard in 1954 and now a national heritage road. Hotel night in Nghia Lo.

Proposed distance: 130 km

Day 4 Nghia Lo → Mu Cang Chai · 130 km · ~4h · (B/L/D)

Tea hills, the Tu Le valley and then Khau Pha, the pass paragliders love. Plenty of photo stops before a homestay night among the terraces.

Proposed distance: 130 km

Day 5 Mu Cang Chai → Sapa · 160 km · ~5h · (B/L/D)

O Quy Ho day: switchbacks that climb through the clouds before dropping into Sapa. Evening wander to the old stone church and night market.

Proposed distance: 160 km

Day 6 Sapa — trek day · (B)

Bikes rest, legs work. A gentle guided walk through Hmong and Dao villages, rice-terrace viewpoints and a hidden waterfall.

Day 7 Sapa → Thac Ba Lake · 230 km · ~6h · (B/L/D)

Coffee on the Nam Thi River looking across to China, then quiet Road 152 through palm forest to Vu Linh. Afternoon boat trip and swim on Thac Ba.

Proposed distance: 230 km

Day 8 Thac Ba → Hanoi · 180 km · ~5h · (B/L)

Along the Red River dyke through Phu Tho and Son Tay, timed to reach Hanoi before the evening rush.

Proposed distance: 180 km
