Top 10 Off-Road Motorbike Routes in Vietnam

AZ Motorbikes — homestay

Vietnam has earned its reputation on famous mountain roads and sweeping scenic drives. But for riders who want more than tarmac, the country hides something even better: a vast web of dirt trails, river crossings, forest tracks and forgotten paths that lead deep into country few travelers ever see. This is where the real adventure lives — on terrain that only a capable bike, proper tyres and ideally a local guide can reach. Below are ten of the best off-road motorbike routes in Vietnam, from high cloud ridges to jungle trails, along with what to expect from each.

1. The Ta Xua ridges (Son La)

High, remote and often wrapped in cloud, the trails around Ta Xua climb to the famous "dinosaur spine" ridge. Steep, technical and spectacular, this is cloud-hunting country with riding to match.

2. Hoang Su Phi back-trails (Ha Giang)

Beyond the main Ha Giang Loop, the dirt tracks threading through Hoang Su Phi's rice terraces and tribal villages offer some of the most beautiful off-road riding in the north — remote, rough and deeply rewarding.

3. Che Tao & Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai)

Deep valleys, single-track trails and the stunning backdrop of Mu Cang Chai's terraces. The route to the remote commune of Che Tao is a favourite among serious adventure riders.

4. Pu Luong (Thanh Hoa)

A lush nature reserve of jungle trails, bamboo water wheels and stilt-house villages. Greener and gentler than the far north, Pu Luong is perfect for riders wanting off-road scenery without the extreme altitude.

5. Ba Be backcountry (Bac Kan)

Forest tracks winding around Vietnam's largest natural lake, through karst and jungle. A quiet, scenic ride far from the tourist trail.

6. Cao Bang border trails

Remote and rugged riding along the Chinese border, linking waterfalls, caves and tiny frontier hamlets. Rough surfaces and big rewards.

7. Dien Bien highlands

History meets hard riding in the far northwest, where off-camber climbs and red-dirt trails cross a landscape shaped by both nature and the famous 1954 battle.

8. The Ho Chi Minh Trail (western branch)

The stuff of legend — long, lonely stretches of the old wartime supply route winding through jungle and mountains down the country's spine. An epic for riders with time and stamina.

9. Central Highlands red-dirt roads (Dak Lak & Gia Lai)

Coffee plantations, crater lakes and endless red-earth trails define the Central Highlands. The riding is less steep than the north but gloriously open and dusty.

10. Ha Giang's hidden valleys

Beyond the standard loop lie countless unmarked tracks into side valleys and over minor passes — the Ha Giang most visitors never see, and the reason riding with a guide pays off.

Before you go off-road

Off-road riding in Vietnam is enormously rewarding but demands preparation. Ride a proper trail bike (a Honda CRF250L or CRF300L, not a scooter), carry extra fuel and water, never ride remote trails entirely alone, and be honest about your skill level — mud, river crossings and loose descents are unforgiving. A local guide is worth their weight in gold out here, both for route-finding and for help if something goes wrong. New to the region? Start with our Ha Giang Loop guide (slug: ha-giang-loop-guide).
