Beyond the Loop: 10 Must-Ride Stops in Northeast Vietnam

LTT 7985

If Northwest Vietnam is defined by its four great passes and its famous Ha Giang Loop, the Northeast tells a quieter, more secret story. This is a borderland of thundering waterfalls, vast natural lakes, hidden caves and karst valleys — a region every bit as beautiful as its western counterpart, but with a fraction of the traffic. For riders who have "done" the loop and want something fresh, or who simply prefer their adventures off the beaten track, Northeast Vietnam is a revelation. Here are ten must-ride stops that make it one of the country's most underrated motorbike regions.

1. Ban Gioc Waterfall (Cao Bang)

The jewel of the Northeast and one of the largest waterfalls in Southeast Asia, Ban Gioc tumbles in wide tiers directly across the Vietnam–China border. Framed by karst peaks and rice paddies, it is a genuinely jaw-dropping sight — and the reward at the end of a beautiful ride.

2. Ba Be Lake (Bac Kan)

Vietnam's largest natural lake, cradled by jungle-clad limestone mountains. Ride the forest roads around it, take a boat across the still water, and stay overnight in a Tay stilt-house homestay for the full experience.

3. Nguom Ngao Cave (Cao Bang)

Near Ban Gioc, this vast limestone cave system stretches for kilometres, filled with dramatic stalactites and underground chambers. A cool, otherworldly break from the saddle.

4. The Cao Bang countryside

Perhaps the most scenic province in the Northeast — a patchwork of rivers, karst hills, rice fields and tiny villages, laced with quiet roads that are a pure pleasure to ride.

5. Pac Bo (Cao Bang)

A peaceful valley and historic cave of great significance in Vietnam's modern history, set beside a vivid blue-green stream. Serene and scenic in equal measure.

6. Me Pia Pass & Bao Lac

One of the Northeast's great riding thrills — the Me Pia Pass stacks 14 tight switchbacks up a near-vertical mountainside, a rival to any road in the Northwest and far less crowded.

7. Du Gia (Ha Giang's eastern edge)

Green calm, a lovely waterfall and warm homestays make Du Gia a natural link between the Ha Giang Loop and the wider Northeast. See our dedicated guide (slug: du-gia-ha-giang).

8. Lang Son border roads

Remote, scenic routes tracing the Chinese frontier through markets, forts and limestone scenery — a glimpse of a region few foreign riders reach.

9. Than Sa forest (Thai Nguyen)

Wild, quiet riding through protected forest and karst, perfect for travelers who want solitude and nature over sights and crowds.

10. Thac Ba Lake (Yen Bai)

A vast reservoir scattered with more than a thousand small islands — a tranquil, watery landscape that makes a beautiful bridge between the Northeast and Northwest.

Planning a Northeast ride

The Northeast pairs perfectly with a Ha Giang trip for riders with a week or more, letting you combine the famous loop with these quieter borderlands in one grand journey. Roads range from smooth tarmac to rough backcountry, so a capable bike and a flexible itinerary pay off.
