Must-Visit Stops on a Northwest Vietnam Motorbike Tour

Across all the riding routes in Vietnam, Ha Giang rightly deserves its reputation — but it is only one corner of a much larger and more varied north. A Northwest Vietnam motorbike tour strings together some of the country's finest and most diverse scenery: gentle valleys of stilt houses, the most famous rice terraces in the land, the four great mountain passes, and the misty peaks around Sapa. Where Ha Giang is all stark limestone drama, the Northwest adds softness and variety — making it the perfect ride for those who want it all. Here are the must-visit stops on a Northwest loop, roughly in riding order from Hanoi.
Mai Chau
Usually the first stop out of Hanoi, Mai Chau is a gentle green valley of White Thai villages and emerald paddies. It is a soft, scenic introduction to the mountains — perfect for easing into the riding and spending a first night in a traditional stilt-house homestay.
Mu Cang Chai
The crown jewel of the Northwest and home to Vietnam's most famous rice terraces, recognised as a national heritage landscape. In the ripe-rice season of late September and October, the hillsides turn to cascading gold — one of the most beautiful sights in the country.
Khau Pha Pass
Rising above Mu Cang Chai, Khau Pha is one of Vietnam's legendary "four great passes." Long, winding and often wrapped in cloud, it delivers spectacular views over the terraces below — a true highlight of any Northwest ride.
Sapa & Fansipan
The Northwest's famous mountain town, perched beneath Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina. Beyond the busy centre lie terraced valleys, ethnic markets and some of the best scenery in the region. A natural place to rest and refuel mid-trip.
O Quy Ho Pass
The longest pass in Vietnam, crossing the Hoang Lien Son range between Sapa and Lai Chau. Known as the "pass of clouds," its summit often sits above a sea of mist — a genuinely epic stretch of riding.
Than Uyen & Tam Duong
Remote valleys, tea plantations and quiet roads define this less-visited stretch. It is the Northwest at its most peaceful, far from any crowds, with warm welcomes in the small towns along the way.
Thac Ba Lake
A vast reservoir dotted with more than a thousand islands, Thac Ba makes a tranquil finale to a Northwest loop before the ride back toward Hanoi — a calm, watery contrast to the high passes.
Planning your Northwest loop
A satisfying Northwest tour takes around 7 to 11 days, depending on how many passes and detours you add. The region pairs beautifully with Ha Giang for riders with more time, forming a grand loop of the entire north.
