Which Airport Should You Fly Into for Your Motorbike Tour?
One of the first practical questions riders ask when planning a Vietnam motorbike tour is a simple one: which airport should I fly into? There is no single "Vietnam airport" for motorbike travelers, because Vietnam is a long, narrow country stretching more than 1,600 kilometres from north to south. The right airport depends entirely on where your tour begins and ends. Choosing well can save you a long, unnecessary domestic transfer; choosing badly can cost you a day or more. Here is how to pick the right gateway for your ride.
Hanoi — Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
The gateway to the north, and the starting point for the vast majority of Vietnam's best motorbike adventures. If your plan includes the Ha Giang Loop, the Northwest (Mu Cang Chai, Sapa, the four great passes) or the Northeast (Ban Gioc, Ba Be, Cao Bang), fly into Hanoi. It is well connected internationally and sits within easy reach of the mountains. This is where most of our tours begin.
Da Nang International Airport (DAD)
Central Vietnam's main hub, and the perfect choice for riding the famous Hai Van Pass, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the Central Highlands, or a coastal route. Da Nang is also just a short hop from Hoi An — one of our pickup cities — making it ideal for central and cross-country tours. If your journey runs between north and south, Da Nang is a natural start or finish point.
Ho Chi Minh City — Tan Son Nhat (SGN)
The gateway to the south, and the busiest airport in the country. Fly into Saigon for the Mekong Delta, the southern coast, the Central Highlands from the south, or a south-to-north cross-country epic. It is the logical bookend for any tour exploring the lower half of Vietnam.
What about domestic connections?
Vietnam has an excellent, inexpensive domestic flight network linking these three main hubs with smaller cities. If your international flight only reaches one city, a cheap one- or two-hour domestic hop can position you exactly where your ride begins. Just factor the extra time and a little buffer into your plans.
